Addictions and Stigma in the Therapy Room with Brandi Riddoch

Couch to Couch

In today’s episode I had the great fortune to speak with Brandi Riddoch, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) from New Brunswick. In this episode we dove deep to discuss substance use, addictions, and the stigma facing those affected. Specifically, we spent time discussing the therapeutic relationship with respect to substance use clients; how the stigma can sometimes enter into therapy through the therapist themselves and the harmful effects that can have. Afterwards, we discussed the importance of the therapist to maintain what Carl Rogers would describe as an empathetic, congruent, and nonjudgmental safe space for clients that holds a deep respect for their personal autonomy and agency.
