Gemma Percival (MD, MN) is a third-year anesthesiology resident based in Saskatoon. She earned her medical degree from the University of Calgary and possesses a masters in Nursing Leadership and Management from the University of Toronto. Dr. Oksana Prokopchuk-Gauk is the Provincial Medicine Lead with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and an adult hematologist with the Saskatchewan Bleeding Disorders Program based at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. She completed her undergraduate and medical training at the University of Saskatchewan, followed by a Hematology residency in Calgary and Transfusion Medicine Fellowship in Edmonton. Dr. Prokopchuk-Gauk actively participates in provincial and national transfusion medicine committees, including the National Advisory Committee on Blood and Blood Products. Her research interests include identifying strategies to improve transfusion safety and blood utilization and optimize perioperative care in patients with bleeding disorders. Allison Houseman is an teacher in the Saskatoon Public School Division who specializes in working with young people with complex needs. She has worked primarily with autistic individuals in specialized programs that support students in developing strategies to assist them in managing challenging behaviour to better enhance their ability to learn communication and life skills. Her passion is to assist new professionals within the field to better equip themselves with what can be expected in a classroom that supports more complex individuals and the skills that they may find useful both in their teaching as well as their personal lives to ensure a healthy balance. Ep 13: Grand Rounds: Clarifying Confusion: Mechanisms Underlying the Most Common Postoperative Complication in Older Adults: Delirium (Dr. Miles Berger)

Join us for grand rounds this week where Dr. Miles Berger, a neuroanesthesiologist at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, presents on postoperative delirium in older adults. Dr. Miles Berger completed his undergraduate work in biochemistry at Columbia, an MD and PhD (in neuro-endocrinology) at the University of California at San Francisco, and a transitional internship, Anesthesiology Residency and a Neuroanesthesiology faculty fellowship at Duke University School of Medicine. He joined the Duke tenure-track faculty in 2014, and is currently an Associate Professor in the Duke Anesthesiology Department. His research group seeks to understand the mechanisms of perioperative neurocognitive disorders in older adults, and uses a transdisciplinary approach combining EEG, functional/structural MRI, neurocognitive testing and delirium screening, and molecular and cellular assays in both CSF and plasma samples. He is passionate about training the next generation of anesthesiologist-scientists, and serves as co-director of the Duke Anesthesiology Research Track Residency Program. He will be inducted this Fall into the Academy of Research Mentors of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education & Research (FAER).
