Good Change: Conversations About Making a World of Difference

14-03-2021 • 1 hr 6 mins

The co-founder and director of Redmond Proficiency Academy (RPA), Dr. Jon Bullock is a renowned education visionary and teaching practices innovator who has long espoused the benefits of personalized and compassionate learning environments. His state-of-the-art administration of RPA (one of the largest brick and mortar public charter schools in America), team-first leadership style, and selfless empowering of staff and students alike set him apart as one of the brightest and most accomplished educators of the 21st century.

In this episode he Dr. Bullock shares why student discomfort need not be a part of their education; the unique and repeated everyday opportunities for teachers to be the change catalyst that can positively alter the trajectory of any student’s life; that having a frog in your throat doesn’t mean you aren’t a vegetarian; how changing just one variable in a teaching formula can change an entire school; that our federal tax and political structure makes people feel less worthy and unsupported; and why our scarcity mindset is invalid and gets in the way of creating common ground

About the Guest:

Jon Bullock is currently the Executive Director of Redmond Proficiency Academy, a public charter school he co-founded in 2009. For nearly 25 years, Jon has worked with young people as a teacher, coach, and administrator. As a community leader, he has developed a deep connection to the people in Redmond. Jon has combined his passion and skills as an educator with the private sector and non-profit experience to develop one of the largest and most successful charter schools in the U.S. He serves as the Board Chair for the Oregon Coalition of Community Charter Schools and as a member of the Board of Trustees for Southern Oregon University.

Jon has earned acclaim for speaking to students, educators, and community members about acceptance and the power of vulnerability. His TED Talk “What’s In Your Bag?” challenges people to be honest with themselves and those around them about their hopes, dreams, fears, and failures. These ideas are at the core of his leadership philosophy, and they inform his approach to public education and community building.
