Our Editor's Take

What happens when a community's deceived by those they tried to help? That is the story featured in the 2022 podcast docuseries Chameleon: Wild Boys. The small Canadian town of Vernon, British Columbia, did everything possible to take care of two boys who emerged from the forest. The boys said they'd never experienced civilization. It turned out to be a lie. Then, they disappeared. This podcast tells the true story of what happened to these wild boys and the town they conned.

Host Sam Mullins is a Canadian writer and comedian. He's known for his award-winning solo shows and comedy writing for television and radio. Sam is also the ideal host for the podcast, as it's his hometown of Vernon where the events took place. He was a teenager in 2003 when the boys arrived in town. The host saw the local people take them in. Then he saw their story unravel. After the boys disappeared, Vernon citizens had endless questions. Mullins has now decided to share this strange story. He wants to find the boys and get those questions answered. He's determined to find the truth.

Mullins' hosting style is calm, clear, and informal. His manner makes the podcast both compelling and easy to listen to. Mullins tells this extraordinary tale by speaking to members of the town. He even talks to the boys themselves. It's an incredible story. This is the first time anyone has heard direct from the source. The people that lived through the events and those that caused them finally speak. Listeners won't believe where the story ends up.

All episodes are available as a nine-part series and are between 30 and 45 minutes long. Chameleon: Wild Boys has been well-reviewed in international publications. The Guardian, Economist, and Vulture have all praised the show. True crime fans may also like the other stories in the Chameleon podcast series.
