However, smaller farms struggle to keep up, especially given that farmers do not set commodity prices, leading to unpredictable profitability.Succession planning remains a significant challenge for multi-generational farms. Only 23% of family farms have a succession plan in place. Covington highlighted the importance of strategic planning and decision-making in ensuring the continuity of farming operations. This week's North American Ag Spotlight is a little different, last week I attended the 2024 American Agri-women Fly-In in Washington DC. Among the many speakers we heard there was one extraordinarily excellent presentation by University of Delaware Professor Emeritus David R. Legates, Ph.D., C.C.M. His content is thought provoking and important as it flies against the grain of current ideology. From the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation. David R. Legates presentation was titled, 'How will Climate Change Affect Agriculture?' he did a deep dive into real climate data and how environmental extremism is causing problems for the American farmer and overall global food security. Legates has testified three times as an expert witness before the US Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works and before both Pennsylvania House and Senate Committee meetings on climate change. Today, we are joined by Amanda Freund, a third-generation farmer from East Canaan, Connecticut. Together with her father, Matt, Amanda manages their company called CowPots, where the family manufactures biodegradable containers using the dairy farm’s digested and composted manure.Amanda's connection to compost goes back to her 8th-grade science fair project, where she compared different carbon sources in compost piles. She also served as an agriculture volunteer with the Peace Corps in Zambia from 2010-2012, where she trained farmers on building and maintaining compost piles. Today, she oversees production schedules, marketing, and distribution of their value-added compost products nationwide.CowPots uses pulp molding equipment to manufacture biodegradable, plantable containers from digested and composted cow manure.
