Our Editor's Take

But What Do I Know? is a podcast that empowers people to express themselves confidently in all settings. Creator and host Chid Suzan is particularly interested in supporting people of color. She wants them to stop diminishing their knowledge by saying things such as, "But what do I know?" Suzan is an urban planner in Canada who promotes community engagement.

The But What Do I Know? podcast offers varied insights. Each episode has a "clue-in" segment where Suzan discusses newsworthy topics. Subjects include cultural news, such as notable music releases and TV show reviews. Other topics include political issues, such as voter turnout and gun violence. Suzan's soothing voice and background music complements her content.

She follows clue-in segments with main segments where she interviews thought leaders. Several guests on But What Do I Know? are therapists who strengthen her podcast's purpose. Aja Evans is a counselor who specializes in finances. She shares two things couples should discuss before getting married. She warns listeners not to enter relationships expecting to change their partner's mind about those things.

Evans defines which financial goals enable stability, status, or both. She discusses prenuptial agreements. She says to pay rent before traveling. Listeners learn why that makes trips better. Evans explains where Louis Vuitton bags belong in financial plans. She and Suzan analyze why some people demand partners with six-figure incomes. Their input might make some people rethink dating strategies.

Suzan interviews therapist and boundaries coach Kristin Winchester. They reveal surprising research about boundaries. One study shows boundaries make people feel closer to each other, not more distant. Listeners learn why. Winchester teaches how to set boundaries in partnerships, friendships, families, and at work. She explains how to maintain boundaries, which is often harder than setting them.

But What Do I Know? teaches everyone to speak without doubting themselves. Suzan facilitates this with her exceptional listening skills. Unlike some hosts, she doesn't interrupt guests or dominate the dialogue. When she speaks, it's thoughtful, measured, respectful, and helpful. That's maybe why her podcast receives consistent award nominations.
