Our Editor's Take

The Amelia Project is a fictional podcast series about an agency that helps people fake their own deaths. It is a creation of playwrights Philip Thorne and Oystein Brager. It has won many prizes, including the 2022 Audio Verse Awards for Best Audio Play. It was also nominated for the British Podcast Awards' Best Fiction Podcast.

Every episode of The Amelia Project is suspenseful. They usually begin the same way. A person leaves a message on the agency's voice mail. The person then comes in for a chat with The Interviewer, who wants to hear their story. Why do they want to fake their deaths? What brought them to the point of wanting to throw their life away and start fresh? The characters are complex but relatable to many. Their unique stories are fantastical and always engaging.

The Amelia Project also includes bonus miniseasons. The Lockdown Tapes, recorded in April and May of 2020, incorporate the upheaval of the times into the show. "Forgive Amelia" is a triptych episode wherein the project's namesake unburdens herself.

The Amelia Project is unique. Episodes are stand-alone while forming a greater whole. Casual listeners who want a 20-minute escapade will enjoy each guest character's story. Those looking for a new favorite show can reach back to the show's beginning and hear a greater narrative emerge. What at first seemed like unconnected stories culminate into intergalactic conspiracies.

Lovers of speculative fiction may enjoy each imaginative story. The podcast is an excellent choice for people who like tragic humor. Audiophiles might also appreciate the show's excellent sound production and voice acting. The Amelia Project is a compelling program.
