Our Editor's Take

On the Counselling Insights podcast, listeners hear from the counseling community. Host Vicki Enns talks with professionals about their challenges, aspirations, and inspirations. She also asks guests to share their wisdom. What helps counselors and those in the helping profession stay enthusiastic and positive? Continual learning is one of the most crucial methods that guests practice. Enns hopes their insights help listeners improve their well-being.

The podcast host is a mentor and trainer for counselors and helping professionals. In addition to her work at the Crisis & Trauma Resource Institute, Enns runs a private practice for trauma recovery. Her work focuses on mindfulness, ethics, anxiety, and trauma. When training, Enns emphasizes cultural perspectives and personal experiences. Collaboration and respect are also vital components of her work.

Enns edited Counselling in Relationships: Insights for Helping Families Develop Healthy Connections. She's also the co-author and editor of Counselling Insights. Enns developed the podcast to continue the work she began in her book. She provides strategies for people to help themselves and others deal with stressors. Topics include depression, dementia care, situational trauma, and much more.

Each episode features a special guest who shares their experiences in the field. Enns considers these interviews part of her "sacred work of collaborating with others." She asks each guest what makes them passionate about their role. They also reveal what they've discovered about themselves through their work.

When Tom Walker joins, the two discuss "high-intensity self-care." Walker is a mental health professional who specializes in addiction. He and Enns discuss how traumatic childhood experiences can lead to long-term stress. Walker's difficult childhood helped him understand the necessity of supporting caretakers.

Social worker and psychotherapy specialist Michelle Gibson comes on another episode. She discusses the Internal Family Systems model of counseling. Every person contains many parts. These parts try to protect "the Self." Understanding the roles of each of these parts helps people heal themselves.

Counselling Insights offers support, community, and strategies. Listeners hear what keeps counselors learning and what wisdom keeps them going strong. New podcast episodes arrive once a month.
