Veg Out 570: Language Matters
Speciesist language reflects our societal norms that certain species are inferior to others. Words that are commonly used in our language can emphasize these norms, while the use of euphemisms can help to create a mental distance from any animal suffering. Join us as we discuss speciesist and non-speciesist language and some opportunities for how we can make shifts towards using more animal-friendly language in our everyday conversations.  News and Events Links: Stefano's Sandwiches: https://www.auburnlane.com/stefanos-sandwiches-plants-a-new-home-on-dundas-west/ Fresh Restaurant: https://www.freshkitchens.ca/en/locations/on/toronto/386-bloor-street-west 5 Principles Vegan Pop-Up Brunch (June 16): https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/vegan-pop-up-brunch-tickets-907230850897?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl The Art of Kindness (June 29): https://www.facebook.com/events/975445924131859/  Episode Links: Animalogy Podcast by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau: https://colleenpatrickgoudreau.com/animalogy-podcast/ PETA's Animal-Friendly Idioms: https://www.peta.org/features/animal-friendly-idioms/ The Save Movement Non-speciest Language: https://thesavemovement.org/non-speciesist-language/ How Do People Feel About Non-Speciesist Language (summary by A. Veg Out 565: Homelessness and Companion Animals
Sanctuary Doc is a nonprofit multimedia project sharing visual stories of compassion for animals across challenging contexts. One such story involves exploring the connection between humans experiencing homelessness and their companion animals. On this episode, we are joined by Sanctuary Doc’s co-founder, Thomas Machowicz, and board member, Diana Hulet. Both are animal photojournalists who have been using their lens to capture the bonds and realities faced by people and their companion animals experiencing homelessness, as well as the vet teams who help keep the animals healthy and these families together. Join us as we discuss the importance of bringing visibility and compassion to humans and non-human animals in vulnerable circumstances and the role of mindfulness in animal activism and photography. Veg Out 560: Vegan Myth Busting
Veganuary is a non-profit organization out of the UK that encourages people to try veganism for the month of January. You can sign up here to get meal plans, recipes and their celebrity cookbook. Lots of resources available at the site, and we’ll of course link to it in the show notes. Veganuary can help with the food choices, but there’s also the social aspect of veganism. It can be difficult navigating being vegan in your work, family and personal life. There are lots of myths about being vegan that we would like to debunk for you today so we can help you on your journey to veganism, or if you are already vegan, reinforce what you know, and give you tips on how to explain these things if you are ever in a position to do so.  Links: Sausage Party's Valentine's Market: https://www.facebook.com/events/1098860794805970/?acontext=%7B%22event_action_history%22%3A[]%7D Sign up for Sam Turnbull's Seitan School: https://theultimatevegankitchen.com/ Body Shop Certified 100 percent vegan: https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/beauty/the-body-shop-vegan/ Dog meat ban coming to South Korea: https://www.hsi.org/news-resources/south-korea-bans-dog-meat-industry/ Eating Healthy on a Budget: https://open.spotify.com/episode/457XBrXNisu51MDq3SFpFx Vegans and Protein: Brenda Davis, RD on Main Street Vegan Podcast: https://mainstreetvegan.com/the-surprising-truth-about-protein-vegans/ Credits: Hosts: Barbi, Jeanette and Sweta Editing: Jeanette Episode Summary: Jeanette Theme Music: Matt Judge

Veg Out 552: Plant Based Treaty at the University of Toronto
On today's episode, we talk to an amazing activist, Yarim Hinojosa, who has been involved in championing the Plant Based Treaty campaign at the University of Toronto. We'll hear about the initiatives that are taking place on campus to address how our current food systems are fuelling the climate crisis. We'll also learn how universities provide a unique opportunity to implement the Plant Based Treaty and how the benefits of switching to a plant-based food system extend far beyond climate change. It's an inspiring conversation you won't want to miss!
