This week I discuss the importance of naturally increasing testosterone levels as we get into our 30's and beyond! Testosterone can play a role in muscle mass, strength, libido, sex drive, improved mood and bone strength. This week I discuss a study that was done in February 2019, which looked at the association between push-up exercise capacity and future cardiovascular events among active adult men. The study found that participants who were able to complete more than 40 push-ups had a significantly lower risk of incident cardiovascular disease events compared to those who completed fewer than 10 push-ups. The study used push-up capacity as an objective measurement of fitness and cardiovascular disease risk. However, I highlighted the limitations of the study, which was based on self-reported dietary information and did not consider other factors that may affect health. I also question the credibility of the American Heart Association, noting their financial ties to pharmaceutical and biotech companies. This week I discuss some of the benefits of sprinting to add to your weekly or bi-weekly routine. You can sprint on land but you could also do it in the pool, on the row machine, the rogue echo bike(that's what I do) or even jump rope! Why add sprinting to your routine? Two main reasons are: - When you launch into a sprint, you're not just moving fast—you're engaging a special group of muscles known as fast-twitch muscle fibers. Unlike their slow-twitch counterparts, these fibers are all about explosive power and speed. These fibers have a higher capacity for growth, meaning sprinting can dramatically increase your muscles' size and strength! - Sprinting also elevates your heart rate dramatically, pushing your cardiovascular system to rapidly improve its oxygen processing. Higher VO2 max levels mean your heart and lungs are in top form, allowing you to perform better across all physical activities. Getting started with sprinting doesn't have to be daunting. Begin with short distances—think 30 to 50 meters—and gradually build up as your stamina and confidence grow. Remember, the key is short bursts of maximum effort followed by enough recovery to exert the same effort for each set. This week I discuss how essential quality sleep is and tips on ways to optimize it! As an adult, having between 7 to 9 hours of sleep is the sweet spot for optimal health. Anything less than 6 hours and more than 9 hours could play a role in contributing to weight gain.  Just like I recommend using a food diary, I would also recommend a sleep diary as well. Sleep debt is cumulative, meaning that the more nights with less sleep, the greater likelihood of negative effects taking place. The good news is that you can catch up with just a few consecutive nights of adequate sleep. Once you start tracking it will help you make sleep a priority and start taking steps to improve it! Here are some tips to help: - Consistent bedtime - Dark, Cool Environment - Stop eating 3-4 hours before bedtime - Go outside in the morning to help set your circadian rhythm - Exercise (but not too close to bedtime) - Avoid blue lights from cell phones and TV too close to bedtime - White noise to drown out distractionsand lastly I have been using a red light panel before bed as well!So make sleep a priority and start improving your sleep hygiene by implementing some of the tips I have mentioned above!
