We have talked about the role of mental health in golf in previous interviews with Andrew Jensen and Dr. Bhrett McCabe. How to Break 80 in Golf. Our secrets revealed...
Golf question time! We answer how to break 80 in golf. Just what are the secrets behind the scorecard? Also in this episode...The Match Part IV - Phil Mickelson / Tom Brady vs. Bryson DeChambeau / Aaron Rodgers. Our thoughts and quick bites on the match. Also this week - we received over 700 comments on Reddit to help us make https://www.birdiedads.com/39-golfers-gave-us-the-best-golf-tips-they-ever-received/ (39 pieces of the best golf advice you will ever receive. ) How to Break 80 in GolfWe aren't professional golfers at Birdie Dads. In fact, our motto is to never fear the quad bogey. We live on the course free and fun - but occasionally we put low scores on the card. This week Trebor posted his third round under 80, and earlier this golf season Bryan posted his career first 79. What is the secret to breaking 80 in golf? It turns out - there is a recipe. That recipe includes: No blowup holes Be in position to make pars. You need to get up and down more than once. You don’t need to par every hole Play appropriate tees The secret sauce if your approach shot. Keep the focus but don’t overdo it You never talk to a pitcher during a no-hitter, do you talk to a golfer shooting sub-40 in a round? We aren't really sure. Did you see our video highlighting https://youtu.be/e1n0FB_kvIg (Snoqualmie Ridge Golf Course)? It's pretty epic - especially the hole to carry that ravine. Seriously, crazy. The Match 4: Phil vs. BrysonI personally LOVED the match this time around. The competition was better than recent celebrity boxing matches (wink wink) and the course at Moonlight Basin was spectacular. I was so blown away with the course (and the 711 yard par 5) I had to google where it was (Big Sky, Montana) and the elevation (7500 feet). Here were some of our quick takeaways: The mic'd up players 100% of the time was fabulous Watching Phil and Bryson explain shots and putts shows how detailed they are in the game. Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady ripping shots into the weeds made me feel pretty good. Charles Barkley was hilarious as usual. The overt commercials for Wheels Up and celebrity/athlete cameos was annoying. Bryson's demeanor was on point and lived up to the hype. Aaron Rodgers can putt. How can the MEVO help you? How to break 90 with golf data.
In this episode we highlight how we are collecting data on our golf swing and what we will do with it. There is no shortage of golf equipment claiming to solve your game and lower your score. If we can learn anything from sports trends one clear path to improvement lies in data. What golf data are you using? Collecting Golf Data at HomeIn our kid filled golf life we have to get creative with how we practice golf, when we practice golf and how we use our time. Balancing diapers, daycare, jobs, it's tough to get golf in. BUT, with the MEVO we are building a series of golf data points to focus our practice AT HOME! All this golf talk, I wish I knew these https://www.birdiedads.com/5-things-i-wish-i-knew-before-playing-golf/ (5 things before I started playing golf). First Step: What Stands Out With Your Golf Swing?Bryan breaks down his work with the MEVO and we look at areas he should begin to focus. What the data really highlights is the question: what is your goal? Seriously, what do you want out of using the MEVO? Is it to hit the ball farther? To hit your irons more consistently? To focus on an approach distance? Baseline Golf DataBryan shares his baseline data and we help set 3 golf goals for the next 4 weeks. With a specific golf program we can get Bryan to break 80, because we've already broken 90...what else can we do? Do you like free golf stuff? Golf Questions: Slope vs. Course Rating. Ep. 49
In one sentence explain slope in golf terminology.  Go!  Were you able to do it?  How fast are the greens in PGA events and how do they measure it?  What is the difference between slope and course rating?  We ask the golf questions that most golfers don’t know the answers to.  But the key question is, does it matter?  Does slope really matter in golf?  Kind of… I’ve stumbled around the golf course for over 30 years and only recently did I learn what the slope rating is and why it matters.  Golf Questions: What is Slope? The method by which slope is calculated is intense - but purposeful.  USGA officials traverse the course calculating a score for each hole based upon 5 factors while also analyzing obstacles that fall within 10 categories.  These include trees, fairway width, bunkers, water, on and on...even a psychological factor!  After all factors are weighted and considered the team assigns their scores for a course which determine a course rating and a bogey rating.  The slope rating after all factors are considered and math problems are computed calculate a specific number.  The average slope rating is 113.  Your local average course likely has a slope close to 120.  That number (slope) represents the difference between a scratch golfer and a bogey golfer on that specific golf course.  The higher the slope, the more difficult the course.  Does it matter?  Kind of.   What is the difference between slope and course rating? If the slope rating is the value that represents a difficulty for a 20+ handicap player, the scratch rating is a value that determines difficulty for a scratch player.  The course rating is a truer indicator of the difficulty of a course.  The higher the number: the more difficult the course.  On a course with a course rating of 69.5 means a scratch player would score an average of 69.5  That compares to other courses easily.  A course with a rating of 73 would be 2.5 strokes harder to comparable scratch golfers.  This rating is dependent of the factors and obstacles by a USGA team.   How fast are PGA greens?  Let’s check the STIMP. STIMP is the speed of a green represented in a numerical value.  The higher the number, the faster the green speed.  If you are out comparing golf courses you don’t just walk in and demand a STIMP rating.  But if you’re interested and believe your course does actually measure it, know that STIMP changes frequently and is largely based upon specific course days and conditions.  The STIMP rating is perhaps the one value in golf that is easily and uniformly calculated.  A device called a STIMPmeter is used to release a ball from a precise distance, height and angle (uniform to all courses).  The distance the ball travels is the STIMP rating.  A ball that travels 10 feet on the green creates a STIMP of 10.  A ball that travels 14 feet on the exact same device with the same conditions is a SITMP of 14.  (think of the difference on the golf course of 4 feet on a single putt!).   For reference, PGA events typically keep their greens at a STIMP of 12.  Anything above that at your local course and your head greenskeeper is just a jerk.  Many private golf courses maintain a STIMP of 10-11 for everyday play.  A local municipal course likely doesn’t frequently measure STIMP but they are likely kept between an 8-10 depending on your local course.   Dang, do you feel like an educated golf dad now?  You should.  And don’t worry about all those numbers on the scorecard, what really matters is how many times you are putting and how many penalty drops you took!   Do you like free golf stuff?
