THEOTIVITY | Theology, Creativity & Culture

Thaddeus Maharaj

THEOTIVITY is a podcast where theology and creativity come together. Many Christians and creatives today are ill-equipped to deal with the challenges of increasingly secular culture. Yet creatives tend to be the influencers and creators of culture's icons that shape our societies. We need a robust and biblical understanding of theology so that we can apply it to today's issues. On this podcast, you'll find audio narrations of articles, interviews with Christian thinkers and creatives, and commentary on how the Biblical world-and-life view impacts every area of life. read less

069 | Building Strong Christian Communities: Families, Churches, Businesses & Schools (ft. Josh Ankenmann)
Building strong Christian Communities is even more important in the troubled times that we live in. With a rising anti-Christian sentiment in much of our culture, Bible-believing Christians are facing more discrimination in the workplace, schools, entertainment, culture and even legally. Everything from DEI to ESG to BLM and CRT, and all the other ominous 3-letter acronyms for ungodly ideologies creates a cultural atmosphere where many conservative Christians feel more and more pressured to compromise their faith. When we're isolated we're vulnerable and weak, so robust communities where Christians learn from, support and build up each other are vital. In this episode, we sit down again with Josh Ankenmann, the founder of Algonquin Digital Media Co. to discuss the importance of building strong Christian communities and how that can radically impact our lives and the community and culture around us for the glory of God. We talk about what it takes to build strong families, churches, businesses and the importance of Christian education in establishing strong and lasting Christian communities that can be a refuge in dark times but also serve as a city on a hill to shine the light of the Gospel to a world in need. 068 | A Christian View of Economics and Wealth💰 ft. Jonathan Wellum
With economic recession, inflation and increasing national debt, how are Christians supposed to think about their money and building wealth to leave an inheritance? In this episode, we interview Jonathan Wellum from Rocklinc Investment Partners Inc. on how God's Law helps us understand economics from a Christian perspective. He talks about how the Bible's economic principles help build strong economies, the problems with inflationary fiat currency, and what's the better (more Biblical) alternative. We also talk about how Christian entrepreneurs can build thriving businesses even in a time of economic hardship and how Christians in full-time ministry can build equity and wealth. Finally, Jonathan exposes some of the most common misconceptions about economics and gives some advice on how pastors can help equip their flocks to think Christianly about economics. 066 | TGC, Pastors, Lockdowns & Repentance ft. Alex Kloosterman
In this episode, we sit down with Pastor Alex Kloosterman from City Hill Baptist Church and Dominion Press in Peterborough, Ontario to discuss an open letter to the churches of Canada in April 2023 written at Dominion Press concerning the issue of the response to the lockdowns. We talk about the effort to recast the situation in a different light and why that's concerning. We also touch on why this issue is still relevant and the proper relationship between forgiveness and repentance. In the conversation, we talk about the sinful idolatry that took place and whether or not these issues are serious enough for a Christian to consider leaving a church. Ultimately, we talk about the desire for real dialogue to happen and reconciliation between these different parties within the Reformed Evangelical world. That should be ours, and every Christian's desire, that we would see true unity happen - not due to compromise, but rather through Spirit-wrought conviction of the truth. ----------------- 🔗 Links Mentioned: 🔹 https://www.dominionpress.ca/p/an-open-letter-to-the-churches-of 🔹 https://ca.thegospelcoalition.org/tgc-canada/canadian-pastors-forum-covid-19/ 🔹 https://www.dominionpress.ca/ 🔹 https://www.hillcitybaptist.com/ ----------------- ℹ️ For more info on THEOTIVITY, please visit: https://www.theotivity.com/ 📩 *Sign up for the newsletter*: https://theotivity.com/newsletter/ 🎙 *Subscribe* to the podcast: https://theotivity.com/podcasts/ 💰 *Donate* at: https://www.givesendgo.com/theotivity ➡️ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theotivity ➡️ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theotivity/ ➡️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/theotivity

063 | Christians, DON'T Send Your Kids to Public School
Should Christian parents send their kids to public school? Does the Bible say anything about how we should educate our children? Many are afraid to give a clear word on this controversial topic. Many think that God's Word leaves it up to us to choose what we think is best or most convenient. However, our children's education is one of the most important responsibilities of parents, and specifically fathers. How Christians educate their children will determine the future of churches and societies - so this is no small matter. I believe that God's Word does have clear guidance for us on this issue, and in this video, I lay out my case for why Christians should not send their kids to public school, but instead are obligated to give their children a distinctly Christian education. This may take the form of homeschooling, private Christian school, classical Christian education or even other creative ways. But, the main point is that if we keep giving our kids to Caesar - they'll keep coming back as Romans. 📰 Read the article here: https://theotivity.com/post/public-school/ ----------------- 📚 Recommended Resources: ✅ The Case For Classical Christian Education by Doug Wilson - https://amzn.to/4668Z8k ✅ The Christian Philosophy of Education Explained by Stephen Perks - https://amzn.to/3Zd6TBr ✅ The Marxification of Education: Paulo Freire’s Critical Marxism and the Theft of Education by James Lindsay - https://amzn.to/3ZeOcwY ✅ Foundations of Christian Education by Berkhof and Van Til - https://amzn.to/3rli0vn ✅ On Secular Education by R.L. 057 | The Conquering Priest-King of Psalm 110 (#datPostMil)
If there ever was a contender for God's favourite Bible verse, it would probably be Psalm 110:1. It is the most quoted verse in the New Testament - and for good reason! Psalm 110 is one of the clearest Messianic Psalms and also one which clearly shows us the victory of Christ over all his enemies. Some have even called it the most Postmillennial Psalm of the Bible... In this episode, we take a look at Psalm 110 and its inspired interpretation through the New Testament to see what it means and how it should affect our lives today. We unpack some of the context, the meaning of the original Hebrew and how the New Testament writers used it to speak of Jesus Christ. From this, we see that Jesus Christ really is the Conquering Priest-King who is at the Right Hand of God the Father, ruling and reigning now as he puts all his enemies under his feet in history. This is a vision of the ascended Christ that is not for the faint of heart, but one whom we all need to see! 056 | Social Justice vs Biblical Justice: What’s the difference and why does it matter?
What's the difference between our secular culture's concept of "Social Justice" and the Bible's true concept of justice? Since the rise of the Black Lives Matter Movement in the wake of the George Floyd riots of 2020, Social Justice has been a hot topic in the cultural conversation. Whether it be through reparations and affirmative action policies, mandatory Equity, Diversity and Inclusion training at our workplaces, Critical Race Theory curriculum in schools, colleges and universities, or not-so-subtle messaging in movies and entertainment - it seems like it is unavoidable these days. As Christians, we must be prepared to give a Biblical answer to our cultural moment today. In this episode, we unpack 6 markers of true Biblical Justice in contrast to Social Justice and see how God's standards of justice are better and more beautiful than the secular perversion of justice.  You can read the article version of this episode here: https://www.theotivity.com/post/social-justice-vs-biblical-justice RECOMMENDED RESOURCES: Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth: 12 Questions Christians Should Ask About Social Justice by Thaddeus J. 055 | Abortion's Killer Angel - The Dark Story of Planned Parenthood's Margaret Sanger
Abortion is one of the evilest scourges to plague our modern world. It results in the deaths of over 70 million innocent babies worldwide every year. It is the intentional destruction of life in the womb, made in the image of God and endowed by God with inherent worth, dignity and value. Yet so many today are silent on this horrendous issue. Even many Christians speak "softly" about the hard truth of the massacre of the unborn. However, we must deal truthfully with the problem if we are to prescribe the right cure. There is hope. But that hope is only found in the Gospel and from a genuinely Christian worldview. In this episode, in order to understand today's abortion industry, we take a look at its founder - Margaret Sanger. We see how her life and upbringing, the various radical ideologies she espoused (such as racism, Malthusian eugenics and Marxism), and her lifestyle all contributed to the shape of the abortion industry today. As we explore these things, we will see just how dark abortion is, but also how gloriously bright the light of the Gospel can shine into this darkness. 054 | God's Sovereignty Over Evil, plus some Implications & Objections (God's Sovereignty & Human Responsibility Series - Part 3)
One of the greatest challenges to God's total sovereignty over all things is the problem of evil. Is God sovereign over evil, and if so, doesn't that then make Him responsible for evil? In this last episode of this series, we'll consider this conundrum through the lens of Scripture itself to see what God's Word has to say on the topic. We'll also consider some important implications of this doctrine, and answer a few objections which were raised. Lastly, we'll also give you some recommended resources for further study. 053 | God's Sovereignty in Salvation Over Who Comes to Faith (God's Sovereignty & Human Responsibility Series - Part 2)
Who's choice is ultimate in salvation? God's or man's? This is the question we'll be tackling in the second episode of this series. We'll be taking a look, especially at Paul's teaching on the topic in Romans 8-10 and also from the lips of Jesus in John 6. We'll also consider what other relevant passages of Scripture have to say on God's and our roles in salvation. We'll then contemplate what this means for us today as we reflect on our salvation. These are important truths for us to not just know, but also to love and to hold dear in our hearts. They are core to our assurance and comfort as believers. 052 | Libertarian Free Will vs Biblical Compatibilism (God's Sovereignty & Human Responsibility Series - Part 1)
If God is sovereign, then how can we have free will? This is a question that has puzzled Christians and kept theologians debating for centuries now. On the surface, it seems like a conundrum. Some argue that we must be totally free otherwise we would be like robots. Others have argued for a type of hard determinism that resembles pagan fatalism and fate. Many just throw up their hands in frustration. Is there any way we can know for sure? In this episode, we start a series where we'll be taking a deep dive into the mysteries of God's sovereignty and human responsibility. In this first episode, we'll start by clearly defining our terms and looking at what is meant by Libertarian Free Will and Biblical Compatibilism - two important phrases in this discussion. From there, we'll continue by looking at some important Biblical texts and what they clearly teach. We'll end off this series by contemplating what this means about the fact that evil exists, some pastoral implications and answer some objections. 051 | The False Doctrine of the Rapture (Matthew 24: Last Days series - Part 6)
The Rapture is one of the most popular beliefs held by many Evangelical Christians today. Yet, it is a doctrine that is relatively new in church history and based on some very shaky foundations. In this episode, as we end off this series in Matthew 24, we examine this doctrine historically and biblically to see if it is actually true. Like good Bereans, we must search the Scriptures thoroughly to see if the traditions we've inherited are actually biblical or not. This doctrine has captivated the imagination of millions of Evangelicals and shaped their understanding of the End Times. While it is not a primary doctrine, it is not unimportant and has major ramifications for Christians today. By examining Matthew 24 and other relevant passages, we explore whether this popular belief is actually true.
