A Full Free Agency Preview
We are about 12 hours away from the beginning of NHL free agency and there are a number of major storylines that are really coming down to the wire. From Steven Stamkos in Tampa Bay to Sam Reinhart in Florida, there are a number of negotiations that are still ongoing that will have a major effect on how things play out on Monday as the market opens up.Jason and Frank kicked off today’s podcast by digging into both of those situations. From there, they got into some of the big moves that we got over the weekend, which led them into some talk about the Utah Hockey Club and their blueline reconstruction. Could they keep making moves? Frank seems to think so and he threw in a couple of other teams that could surprise the hockey world on July 1st.They also talked about some intriguing value options including the recently bought-out Jeff Skinner and some non-qualified RFAs who could find ways to bounce back next season.Tyler then swung by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about a few teams that have big question marks heading into free agency. After that, they talked about Patrick Kane re-signing in Detroit. The news broke while we were recording, so they gave their thoughts on that and more from around the league to wrap up the podcast.1:05 - Lightning make moves7:55 - Utah’s future9:40 - Surprise teams for July 116:45 - The market for Jeff Skinner19:55 - Non-qualified RFAs23:10 - Fill in the Blank35:25 - Expectations in Nashville38:30 - What could the Oilers do?Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Going Full Speed Into Offseason Mode
The Florida Panthers are Stanley Cup Champions for the first time in franchise history after taking down the Oilers in Game 7 of the final. Frank and Jason started the show by congratulating the Panthers on the win and talking about what will go down as an all-time Stanley Cup Final. That of course led to some conversation about what the Panthers could get up to this summer and the biggest question that GM Bill Zito needs to find an answer to is whether or not they can find a way to keep Sam Reinhart in south Florida. The guys talked about what Reinhart’s next deal could look like and whether or not the Panthers will pay up following his 57-goal campaign. After that, Jason and Frank went around the league and discussed some of the big offseason storylines that are popping up around the league. They started with Steven Stamkos and his situation with the Tampa Bay Lightning. From there, they hit on the cap-clearing trade that the Canucks made yesterday and what they could do with their newfound flexibility and whether or not Jake Guentzel could be a hit. They also talked about some new trade targets on Frank’s board (Jacob Trouba) and updated a few situations that we’ve been keeping an eye on for a while (Mitch Marner).Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about Jeff Skinner, Darnell Nurse, and Martin Necas.1:55 - Panthers win the Stanley Cup4:00 - Reinhart’s future6:35 - Stamkos & the Lightning9:40 - Canucks & Guentzel13:55 - Future of in-person drafts15:30 - Trade Targets: Jacob Trouba18:40 - Other Trade Targets (Marner, Islanders cap situation)27:25 - Utah’s plans31:00 - Fill in the BlankWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Seventh Heaven in Sunrise

Seventh Heaven in Sunrise
It all comes down to this! Game 7 in Sunrise, Florida between the Oilers and Panthers for The Stanley Cup. For Edmonton, they’ll be looking to make history as just the second team in NHL history to complete a 3-0 series comeback in the final. For the Panthers, it’s a chance to lift up Lord Stanley on home ice.Gregor kicked things off with a quick vibe check from down in Florida, where he downloaded the Uber app for the first time and had quite the experience. He talked about how Oilers fans are feeling and how into The Cup Final Florida is. He then gave us some Game 7 numbers.Frank then looked back at what was a nightmare Game 6 for the Panthers. Rogers Place in Edmonton was rocking and the Oilers responded to their home crowd appropriately. It was all Oilers, all night. Will that momentum carry over for the road team tonight? Or will the Panthers finally find their game? They also talked about Sergei Bobrovsky not being at Panthers practice the other day. Is it a sign that Bobrovsky isn’t healthy? Or do the Panthers feel like he’s out of gas? The guys talked about that.Tyler checked in for Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about Matvei Michkov coming over from Russia earlier than anticipated, Patrick Kane’s plans, and the Leafs' goaltending situation. They wrapped up the pod with an update on the Rutger McGroarty situation in Winnipeg. Frank gave some insight into what is going on with one of the Jets top prospects.7:48 - Vibes in Florida9:40 - Game 6 thoughts14:50 - What’s up with Bob?24:00 - The legacies on the line32:00 - Buy or Sell (Michkov, Kane, Leafs’ goaltending)44:45 - Rutger McGroartyWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Offseason Kicks Off With A Bang!

The Offseason Kicks Off With A Bang!
After a wild Wednesday full of activity around the NHL, it’s safe to say that the offseason is officially here. Jason and Frank kicked off the podcast by breaking down the biggest shocker of the day: the deal that sent Pierre-Luc Dubois to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Darcy Kuemper. For Dubois, it’s yet another change of scenery in his young career. Will this finally be the wake-up call that he needs to become a more consistent player? Jason talked about that. Is this a good move for the Los Angeles Kings? Frank explained why he likes the move for GM Rob Blake. From there, they dug into the Jacob Markstrom trade that went down earlier in the day. This is a deal that almost went down at the trade deadline, and Frank explained that, but now the trade is official and Markstrom is a member of the New Jersey Devils. Did the Flames get enough for a legit 1A starting goalie? The guys debated that.Frank wrapped up the trade talk with an update on how the rest of the goalie market could shake down. They then dug into the Barclay Goodrow situation that played out this week. The player is reportedly upset with how the New York Rangers handled things, considering he had a no-trade clause. The guys explained why he shouldn’t be and talked about the other trade that the Sharks made yesterday. To wrap up the show, Tyler hopped in for a Stanley Cup Final themed edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about McDavid’s Conn Smythe case, Bobrovsky’s struggles, and whether or not this series is ending on Friday.1:50 - PLD for Kuemper14:20 - Markstrom to the Devils25:30 - Goalie market update32:40 - Buy or Sell on the Stanley Cup Final41:40 - Hronek stays in VancouverWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Cup Final is Going Back to Florida

The Cup Final is Going Back to Florida
The Stanley Cup Final is still alive as the Oilers ran the Panthers out of the building in Game 4 on Saturday night. Frank and Jason kicked off the podcast by talking about the 8-1 beatdown in Edmonton and if the Oilers can roll any amount of this momentum into Game 5 back down in Florida. From an Oilers perspective, they may have started to figure out how to beat Sergei Bobrovsky and they scored eight goals with a few of their big guns, namely Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman, still staying quiet. They could have more to give but the same could be said for the Panthers, who can likely rely on a much better goaltending performance in Game 5 and have a few of their stars who will be looking to bounceback. The guys focused in on Matt Tkachuk, who has been very quiet all series. Has he been a disappointment or has he done enough away from the scoresheet to be a factor? The guys debated that and talked about which star players will come through in Game 5.From there, they got to Tyler and a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked them about the future of Leon Draisaitl in Edmonton, this years free agent crop, and a handful of General Managers in the Eastern Conference who are facing some pressure this summer.0:45 - Oilers win Game 411:35 - Game 5 expectacions13:40 - Conn Smyth race28:20 - Fill in the Blank (Oilers extensions, Eastern GM’s, big free agents)Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Breaking Down The Trade Targets Board

Breaking Down The Trade Targets Board
Frank and Jason are back with a new episode of The DFO Rundown and to lead today’s show: the Edmonton Oilers are on their last leg. They started the podcast by breaking down what we saw in Game 3 last night as the Panthers jumped out to a big lead and then managed to just hang on for the victory.Frank said watching the Oilers this series has been like a plane crash with the number of things that have gone wrong. Jason thinks it’s been more on the fact that Sergei Bobrovsky has been on a whole different level so far in this series. Will the Oilers be able to push this series back to Florida? They wrapped up their Stanley Cup Final discussion with that question. They got to Tyler and a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about some of the new names on Frank’s Trade Targets list and the number of buyouts we could see this summer. Patrik Laine is apparently looking for a fresh start, but how hard will it be for the Blue Jackets to move him? The Blues could be looking to really shake up their roster over the next month or so with players like Brandon Saad and Pavel Buchnevich on the board. Also, Frank gave us 9 potential buyout candidates, will a majority of them actually get to that point? After that, they dug a little bit more into the Pierre-Luc Dubois situation and if a buyout is actually a possibility. They also talked about Jakob Chychrun and his availability in Ottawa plus if they’d be willing to consider a buyout of Joonas Korpisalo. That led to some talk about the goalie market. They wrapped up with a conversation about the St. Louis Blues management plan with Alex Steen set to take over for Doug Armstrong in 2026, that was also coupled with an extension for Armstrong to remain as the President of Hockey Operations until 2029.0:30 - Stanley Cup Final talk8:34 - Will it be a sweep?11:05 - Buy or Sell (Laine, St. Louis, Buyouts)23:25 - Will Dubois get bought out?28:50 - Chychrun rumours & Korpisalo35:35 - The goalie market & Ullmark42:40 - Blues management planWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Bobrovsky Steals Game One of The Stanley Cup Final

Bobrovsky Steals Game One of The Stanley Cup Final
Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli are back with a Monday edition of the podcast as they recapped Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. They broke down how things played out in the series opener as the Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 series lead.Sergei Bobrovsky was electric, posting a shutout that featured more than a handful of jaw-dropping saves. What can the Oilers do to solve him? Gregor actually noticed some adjustments that the Oilers made.Frank also shared his major takeaways from each side. For the Oilers, he was impressed with the fact that the moment didn’t seem to big for them. He also liked that they were able to push the pace of the game. From the Panthers side, even though they didn’t have their best game, they got a win. They can be better and they also have the better goalie. They also talked about the very physical start of the series and how things will continue to play out in that department.Looking ahead to Game 2, the Oilers could be looking to make some changes with their lineup. Could Vincent Desharnais draw in? Will Head Coach Kris Knoblauch make any other lineup changes? The guys debated that.Away from the Stanley Cup Final, the big news of the weekend was the Washington Capitals' purchase of the popular salary cap website CapFriendly. With the sale, the site will be shut down on July 5th. Frank talked about what a massive loss this is for not just fans and media, but other teams around the league.Tyler also swung by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank, brought to you by Wendys.0:40 - Bob steals Game 19:50 - Game 1 takeaways13:00 - Oilers lineup changes17:30 - CapFriendly sold to the Capitals23:30 - Fill in the Blank29:30 - Jake Guentzal’s rights36:00 - Is Chicago a fit?45:00 - Marner updateWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Stanley Cup Final is Set

The Stanley Cup Final is Set
The 2024 Stanley Cup Final matchup is set as both the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers punched their tickets to the big dance with victories on home ice this weekend. Jason and Frank started the podcast with a quick conversation about how these two teams stack up against each other. On the other side of the big wins of course are two gut-punch losses for the New York Rangers and Dallas Stars. The Rangers core seems pretty set and they should run it back, but GM Chris Drury has some tough calls to make when it comes to extending a few young players. On the other side, the Dallas Stars have a few older players, like Joe Pavelski and Matt Duchene, who they need to make decisions on. The guys debated that. From there, they circled back to the Panthers and talked about what makes them successful. Are they similar to Dallas? Or do they present different challenges to the Oilers?Tyler also swung by for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about when the NHL season starts, touching the Conference Finals trophies, and which team the guys are watching the closest heading into the summer. Tyler is keeping an eye on the Blackhawks while both Jason and Frank had different answers. To end the show, they gave their Stanley Cup Final picks.1:15 - The Stanley Cup Final is set7:35 - Rangers & Stars road ahead21:50 - The Panthers' strengths26:00 - Importance of a strong blueline31:40 - Buy or Sell37:00 - Who to watch this summer?41:45 - Stanley Cup Final picksWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Who Has The Edge in Each Conference Final?
The 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs just keep on getting better and better. Both the Eastern and Western Conference Finals are down to best-of-three’s and there has been a lot of drama in each series. Both Frank and Jason were out in Edmonton last night as the Oilers came from behind to win Game 4 against the Dallas Stars. There were plenty of positives to pull from the victory for the Oilers and on the other side, the Stars were dealt a massive blow as Chris Tanev didn’t play the third period after blocking a shot. Frank talked about how significant that loss could be.They also praised Head Coach Kris Knoblauch for his timely adjustments ahead of the game.Out East, the series is tied 2-2 heading back to MSG for Game 5. The Panthers have undoubtedly been the better team but Igor Shesterkin has evened things out and kept the Rangers in a lot of these games. Jason also praised the strong play of Alexis Lafreniere while also talking about how badly the Rangers need their star forwards to find their games. They also took a look at the coaching market as the Seattle Kraken officially introduced Dan Bylsma as their second Head Coach in franchise history. That means the San Jose Sharks are the only team with a vacancy behind their bench.Tyler returned to the show for a new edition of Fill in the Blank presented by Wendys. He asked the guys about a couple of the more interesting names that popped up on Frank’s first Trade Targets board of the offseason.3:30 - Oilers grab momentum12:40 - Can the Rangers find their game?20:00 - Benn’s impact & Hintz’s return25:50 - Kraken hire BylsmaWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Coaching Carousel Continues & Bob Stands Tall at MSG
Jason and Frank are back with a fresh edition of The DFO Rundown to get you through your Thursday. To start off today’s podcast, the guys looked at all the coaching news that’s gone down over the last couple of days. Jim Hiller is staying put in Los Angeles as the Kings announced that they’ll be removing the interim tag from his title. What does that mean for the future of the Kings? They discussed.Sheldon Keefe was not a free agent for long. He’s now officially been announced as the new Head Coach of the New Jersey Devils. Is he the right man to lead the Devils back to the playoffs? From there, they got into the two Conference Finals. They started out in the Eastern Conference where Sergei Bobrovsky pitched a shutout in Game 1 as the Panthers took the series opener. They debated whether or not the Panther's speed and physicality would be too much for the Rangers. They then went into the Western Conference where the Oilers and Stars are getting set for Game 1 out in Texas. There are a couple of big injury situations for either team that will have impacts on this series, most notably Roope Hintz. The Oilers Force Game 7 & An Eastern Conference Final Preview
These Stanley Cup Playoffs just keep on getting more and more dramatic. The guys sat down in Edmonton to record an in-person edition of the podcast after watching the Oilers beat the Canucks 5-1 in Game 6 of their second-round series and has forced a seventh game.It feels like the Oilers got their swagger back a little bit with their big victory. Will that confidence carry over? Or is Game 7 a total coin flip? Jason and Frank discussed. They also hit on the Dallas Stars' dramatic double-OT win over the Colorado Avalanche. Dallas has looked like an absolute wagon these entire playoffs and that was true for most of this series against the Avalanche. Will they have an easy time with whoever comes out of the Pacific? Or will injuries hold them back?Tyler also popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank presented by Wendys where he asked the guys some big offseason questions about the teams who lost in the second round.Coming off those questions, they continued the conversation by talking about the big decisions that the Hurricanes have to make this summer. Do they need to make sweeping changes or can they run it back with a similar group? They also did their preview of the Eastern Conference Final. After putting away the Bruins in six games, the Panthers will meet the President's Trophy winning New York Rangers with a trip to the Stanley Cup Final on the line. The guys discussed the key battlegrounds in that series. They wrapped up the show by talking about the Craig Berube hiring in Toronto. Gregor wondered if he could have a Rick Tocchet like impact with this Maple Leafs group. Frank said this new hire needs to be paired with major roster changes.Frank also had an update on the Matvei Michkov situation. Nichushkin’s Future & Goalie Decisions for the Oilers & Canucks
Frank and Jason are back with a fresh edition of The DFO Rundown as the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continue to heat up. This is just the sixth time in NHL history that all four Round 2 series will go to six games or later. They started out in the Colorado vs Dallas series where the Avalanche picked up a massive win on Wednesday night to keep their season alive. Now, they’re heading back to home ice for Game 6. Can they push the Stars to a seventh game? That led to some talk about Valeri Nichuskin and his future. It was announced that he’s going into the third phase of the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, which comes with a six-month suspension. Will Nichuskin ever be back with the Avs? Frank and Jason talked about that. From there, they went into the series between the Bruins and Panthers where Jeremy Swayman has been outstanding for the Bruins. Speaking of goaltending, that’s the big storyline out West as both the Oilers and Canucks could have some crease drama brewing. They wrapped the show up with a new edition of Buy or Sell with Tyler, an update on the coaching market from Frank, and a tribute to the late Darren Dutchyshen.3:00 - Avs vs Stars & Nichushkin’s future14:45 - Bruins vs Panthers19:20 - Oilers vs Canucks32:00 - The Goalie Conundrum37:40 - Buy or Sell44:50 - Memorial Cup talk46:30 - Coaching UpdateWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Controversial Calls & The Oilers Goaltending Problem

Controversial Calls & The Oilers Goaltending Problem
Boston Bruins fans were up in arms on Sunday night as a controversial goalie interference review didn’t go their way and allowed the Panthers’ eventual game-winning goal to stay on the board. Jason and Frank started the show with that and then eventually moved on to the rest of the series between Boston and Florida, including another controversial moment involving Sam Bennett. They also hit on the other Eastern Conference series between the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes are on the brink of elimination and the odds seem low that they’ll be able to pull of this comeback against the Rangers and that led to a conversation about what the franchise will do in the offseason. From there, they got to the Oilers and Canucks series. Goaltending has been a massive story in this series as Stuart Skinner was pulled in game three and the Oilers are down 2-1 despite controlling play for the majority of the series. Will the Oilers make a change in net ahead of game four? Or will they keep riding Skinner? They debated that and other potential lineup changes for the Oilers ahead of Game 4.They also talked about the Stars taking over their series against the Avalanche. What allowed this series to flip? Frank gave his take on that. They wrapped up the show with a new edition of Fill in the Blank and some talk about the coaching carousel that’s currently going on in the league.1:10 - Bennett goalie interference5:40 - Can the Bruins come back?7:20 - Canes vs Rangers20:30 - Canucks lead Oilers41:40 - Stars vs Avalanche44:00 - Fill in the Blank51:05 - Coaching searches54:10 - Leafs coaching updateWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Maple Leafs Search For a New Coach & Second Round Fireworks
The summer of big moves has begun in Toronto as they fired Sheldon Keefe this morning following another first-round exit. The move was expected and now that it’s official, the Leafs turn their attention to their next hire. Frank and Jason started the podcast by talking about some potential fits and also debated where this Leafs job ranks amongst the other vacancies around the league. They then got into the Stanley Cup Playoffs as second-round action is underway and it has been spicy. We have superstars fighting in Florida, teams out west blowing big leads, and a battle of two giants in the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes. The Oilers held a three-goal lead in their series opener against the Canucks and ended up losing the game in regulation. Frank says it’s exactly the wake up call that the Oilers needed. Could the Oilers turn on the jets and make this a quick series or will they beat themselves like they have in years past?Tyler swung by for a fresh edition of Buy or Sell where asked the guys about some off-season topics including Juuse Saros’ future, the Capitals and Penguins summer plans, and how winning the draft lottery changes things for the Sharks. They wrapped up with some talk about the PWHL playoffs and the upcoming World Championships.0:55 - Keefe fired by Leafs9:05 - Jets need a new Head Coach10:10 - EDIT18:10 - Panthers vs Bruins21:05 - Canucks vs Oilers29:25 - Canes vs Rangers MAJOR EDIT (take our Gregor start)33:23 - EDIT SNIFFLE37:00 - Buy or Sell43:30 - PWHL playoffs & World ChampionshipsWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Previewing a Potentially Electric Second Round
06-05-2024
Previewing a Potentially Electric Second Round
The first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs has come to a close and as Frank said last week on the podcast, it was one of the least exciting first rounds we’ve seen in a while. There were only two series that went the distance and a handful ended in five games or earlier. While the first round wasn’t exactly eye-popping, it’s looking like the second round could be exactly that. Every matchup has some intriguing storylines behind it and there are some juggernaut matchups. Frank and Jason worked their way through the four series and talked about the key factors in each one.The Rangers are already up 1-0 on the Canes and that’s a series that could very easily go to seven games. The other Eastern series features a rested Panthers team going up against a Bruins team that just finished off the Leafs on Saturday night. Can the Bruins get revenge for last season? Before getting to the West, Tyler swung by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank, brought to you by Wendys. He asked the guys a couple of questions about round two and one about what the Leafs need to prioritize this summer. They then got into the two Western series. The Avs and Stars is going to be a grind and is another one that seems destined for seven. We also have an all-Canadian matchup between the Vancouver and Edmonton, which could lead to some serious fireworks both on the ice and online. They wrapped up the pdocast with some talk about what the Maple Leafs and Golden Knights will have to do this summer.4:40 - Rangers vs Canes preview12:30 - The Jack Adams18:00 - Panthers vs Bruins preview24:10 - Fill in the Blank30:50 - Stars vs Avalanche preview39:05 - Oilers vs Canucks46:00 - Changes in Toronto?50:05 - What’s next in Vegas?Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? What’s next for the LA Kings? PLUS: A look at the top 50 free agents
It’s a milestone episode of The DFO Rundown as Jason and Frank have reached episode 300 of the show. They kicked things off by talking a little bit about that before getting into the hockey talk. They started out in Tampa Bay where the Bolts were bounced in five games by the Florida Panthers. The big story there surrounds the future of their Captain, Steven Stamkos. He’s right near the top of Frank’s ‘Top 50 Free Agents’ list but the guys seem to think he’s going to stay put. That led to some talk about other big name free agents, like Golden Knights forward Jonathan Marchessault, who could be on his way out of Vegas.
